Why HEIC photos won't open
iPhone's default camera format is HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format). It packs similar quality to JPG into roughly half the file size, saving storage — but older Windows versions and some websites or programs can't recognize it, so the photo won't open or the upload gets blocked outright.
When to convert to JPG (and when not to)
It depends on where the photo is going. For email attachments, website uploads, or a print shop — anywhere compatibility matters — converting to JPG first is the safe move. If it's just staying on your iPhone or a recent Mac, there's no need to convert; you'd lose the storage savings for nothing.
