Why photo files are so large
Modern phone cameras often exceed 40 megapixels, so a single photo can easily run 5β10MB or more. More megapixels means more information packed into the file, and converting Apple's HEIC format to JPG can sometimes make files even larger. That's usually why you hit limits attaching to email (often capped at 25MB), sending originals over messaging apps, or uploading to a website.
How size reduction works without visible quality loss
There are two main ways to shrink a photo: increasing compression to discard color detail the eye barely notices (JPG quality), or reducing the actual pixel dimensions (resizing). If the photo is only ever viewed on a screen rather than printed, most displays can't even render the full original resolution anyway β dropping quality to around 85β90% often cuts file size by half or more with no visible difference.
When you need an exact size limit
If a form or site requires something like "under 2MB" or "under 1MB", guessing at a quality percentage is slower than using a tool that lets you enter the target size directly and calculates the right compression automatically.
